Mark Knopfler is undoubtedly one of the greatest guitar players of all time. His singing may be gruff, but he counters it with superb guitar playing and songwriting abilities. Mark decided to step away from the hectic pressures of Dire Straits with his own solo career; huge stadiums filled with tens of thousands of fans have given way to smaller gigs with a loyal following.
One of Mark’s lesser known talents is his success with film soundtracks. He started in 1982 with the cult hit Local Hero. No concert is finished until Mark has played the theme Going Home as the last number. In 1983 he composed the soundtrack for two more movies: Comfort and Joy, and Cal. Other soundtracks include The Color of Money, Wag the Dog, The Princess Bride, Metroland, and The Last Exit to Brooklyn.
Mark Knopfler has made guest appearances on the albums of a number of other recording artists. Mark has played with Randy Newman, Chet Atkins, and Willy DeVille. His pseudo super group, The Notting Hillbillies, arrived in 1990.
